The Eastern Cape builds more cars than any other province: Volkswagen assembles in Kariega and Mercedes-Benz in East London, and that manufacturing history shows in the parts trade. Gqeberha and Kariega have a strong cluster of yards and parts dealers with particular depth in VW: Polos and Vivos built up the road mean Polos and Vivos in the yards. East London is the second hub, smaller but established. Between the two metros, the used-parts market is healthier than the province's size would suggest.

Two provinces in one

The Eastern Cape splits sharply between its coastal metros and its rural interior, and the parts demand splits with it. The coast has the corrosion problem every South African coastal city has: salt air working into panel seams and electrical connectors. Inspect locally sourced body and electrical parts carefully, and know that inland-sourced panels are worth asking for.

The interior is a different world. The former Transkei and the deep rural districts run some of the roughest roads in the country, much of it gravel, and the vehicles that work those roads take a beating underneath: shocks, control arms, ball joints, tie-rod ends, springs and exhausts all wear fast, and windscreens collect stone chips constantly. The rural fleet also skews old: bakkies and sedans that would have been scrapped in Gauteng are kept running here for years, which makes the used market the only realistic source for many of the parts that keep them alive. Minibus taxis carry a large share of rural transport in this province, so Quantum and Hiace running gear stays in steady demand.

What that means for finding parts

For the high-volume cars (Polo, Corolla, Hilux, NP200), the metro yards usually have you covered. The harder cases are the older rural fleet and the less common models, where local stock runs thin and the answer sits in a yard in another province. Distances inside the Eastern Cape are long enough that couriering from Gqeberha to Mthatha isn't much different from couriering from Gauteng anyway.

How Kasi Spares works here

We source nationwide. If the part is in a Kariega or East London yard, that's where we'll get it; if it isn't, we search Gauteng, KZN and everywhere else and courier it to you. Sourcing isn't limited to your own province. Tell us the part and the VIN, and we WhatsApp you a price, usually within 24 hours.
