The Quantum carries more South Africans to work every morning than any other vehicle, and it pays for that in parts. Engines and drivetrain
The volume generations run the 2.7 petrol 2TR-FE and the 2.5 D-4D diesel, and complete tested engines for both are the classic Quantum request, usually from an operator whose vehicle earns nothing while it stands. Gearboxes matter nearly as much: taxi clutch work is brutal, and manual boxes, clutch kits and diffs turn over constantly. The newer Quantum moved to Toyota's GD diesel family, and as those vehicles age into the yards their drivetrain parts are becoming a market of their own. Buyers should price a taxi-sourced engine honestly: high hours, but maintained, because downtime costs an operator money and neglect costs him the vehicle.
The parts only a taxi needs
The Quantum has requests no passenger car generates. Sliding-door mechanisms first among them: rollers, tracks, handles and locks wear out from being slammed hundreds of times a day, and complete sliding doors are steady stock. Seat frames and rails for the 14- and 16-seat layouts, including the Ses'fikile spec, come up constantly because commuter seats live a hard life. Windscreens, mirrors and front bumpers round it out, along with rear door hardware.
The Siyaya tail
The old Hiace, the Siyaya, still runs routes years after production ended, kept alive entirely by the yards. Its parts are a distinct pool from the Quantum's and requests for them remain genuinely common: engines, gearboxes, doors and glass for a vehicle whose only remaining factory is the scrapyard.
