The Fortuner is an SUV built on bakkie bones, and for a parts buyer that split is the whole story. Underneath, it shares its diesel drivetrain and much of its running gear with the Hilux, which plugs Fortuner owners into the deepest parts pool in the country. On top sits everything the Hilux doesn't have: a wagon body, a seven-seat interior, and the trim of a family flagship. Those two halves behave like two different markets.
The bakkie underneath
The drivetrain sourcing advantage is real and worth using. Engines and many mechanical parts cross over from the Hilux donor pool, widening supply and keeping mechanical repairs on an aging Fortuner affordable relative to what the badge suggests. One underbody difference matters, though: the Fortuner runs coil springs on its rear axle where the bakkie runs leaves, so rear suspension parts are Fortuner-specific and cannot be borrowed from a Hilux donor. Shocks, coils and the linkages around them are a steady request precisely because these vehicles tow trailers and run gravel to lodges and farms.
The SUV on top
Body and interior demand is where the Fortuner stands alone. Tailgates with their glass, struts and spoilers; rear bumpers and parking sensors; roof rails and side steps; headlights and taillights through the facelift changes; and the interior in full: third-row seats, boot trim, centre consoles and the leather front seats that South African sun punishes. Alloy wheels come up constantly, both for pothole casualties and for owners upgrading. None of this exists on a bakkie donor, so supply depends on crashed and stripped Fortuners specifically, and the popular items move fast when one reaches a yard.
Lights, and who else wants them
Late-model Fortuner LED headlights sit near the top of the national theft lists, alongside the mirrors and badges. Used demand for them is heavy and legitimate, which is exactly why stolen units try to blend in. Treat a far-below-market price as disqualifying, and buy only where the seller can account for the donor vehicle; that is our standing rule when we source them.
